LiveSTRONG with a Taste of Yellow

Last week, i was browsing blogs when i stumbled upon one called Winos and Foodies It is a great little Blog, and i happened to stumble on it on a great day. They were notifying the world of LiveSTRONG day, today.

I did some research and found LiveSTRONG is a foundation in the U.S, they were founded by Lance Armstrong, a world famous cyclist, in 1997 after he was diagnosed with cancer. The webpage states "We provide support to guide people through the cancer experience, bring them together to fight cancer—and work for a world in which our fight is no longer necessary."

October 2nd is LiveSTRONG day. The folks at Winos and Foodies offered everyone a chance to put their cancer story out to the world by creativity. The only requirements were that it be yellow (in honor of the LiveSTRONG foundation) and a heart, to remember those lost that we loved.

These are my apple turnover hearts. I made them this afternoon with the leftover pastry and apples from last week's pie, posing with 2 zucchini and an eggplant, for dinner Ratatouille. I glazed my hearts with some store-bought icing that i dyed yellow.

My hearts are for my Grandparents. My Grandfather died of Lung cancer in the late 70's, i never had the chance to meet him but i am told he was a good man, he served in the army and taught his 6 children many things. My Grandmother died of Stomach cancer when i was 14 years old. I have so many memories of her, watching her bake, Christmastime with a dining room full of goodies, even simple everyday things, like watching her do the laundry in the kitchen sink. She had a brand new washer in the basement, but it was so far out of the way, she preferred to hand wash everything.

Until i was 11, we lived a half block from my Grandmother, so i spent a lot of time at her house. My sisters and i get our gift of baking and love of flowers from her. Her gardens still bloom, 15 years after she has left us. She made sure the plants she had in her last few years would be ones that would last forever. When those plants were over run, my Father split them, and now offspring of my Grandmother's garden grows in my Father's garden.

I wish that my Grandparents had had the chance to meet their six Great Grandchildren. I also hope and wish that these children of the future will not have a Cancer story to tell.

  1. How sad you didn't know your Grandfather, but how wonderful to have lovely memories of your Grandmother.

Thankyou for sharing your heart on LiveSTRONG Day.
